[Commonplace book], 1807-1820.

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of about 200 poems, copied by Isabella and Helen Hill, James Grahame, Elizabeth Richardson, Henry Cockburn, Laurence Hill, and John Richardson. The poems address a wide variety of subjects, including nature, Scottish landscapes, romantic longing, homesickness, and mourning. Titles include Boadicea by William Cowper; Alexander's Feast by John Dryden; The Sabbath: A Poem by James Grahame; Elegy on a Friend drowned in the Irish Channel by John Milton; and several by Mark Akenside; as well as excerpts from longer poems, including Milton's Comus, Edward Young's Night Thoughts, and The Pleasures of Hope by Thomas Campbell.
